Stimulated Raman Scattering by an Intense Relativistic Electron Beam Subjected to a Rippled Electric Field
نویسنده
چکیده
Generation of submillimeter radiation by stimulated Raman scattering in an intense relativistic electron beam subjected to a spatially periodic transverse electric field is examined. The requisite electric field modulation can be obtained by rippling the wall of the conducting drift tube. When the electron beam is subjected to a periodic longitudinal electric field, short wavelength plasmons, rather than photons are generated. The growth rate and other parameters related to this instability are discussed. *This work was supported by the National Science Foundation (Grant ENG77-00340-AO1) and the United State Air Force Office of Scientific Research (Grant AFOSR77-3143B).

A Pierce-type dispersion relation is derived from field theory which describes the interaction of an intense relativistic electron beam with a cylindrical slow-wave structure of arbitrary corrugation depth. It is shown that near a resonance the Pierce parameter can be expressed in terms of the vacuum dispersion function and the space-charge parameter is proportional to a fill factor. The disper...

Backward stimulated Raman scattering using one-dimensional relativistic Vlasov code is investigated. For conditions similar to those of Single-Hot-Spot experiments, the growth and saturation of SRS are studied. Analysis of electron distribution function, longitudinal electrostatic fields, transverse electromagnetic fields, and electron density shows that kinetic effects play an important role i...
متن کاملElectromagnetic Wave Propagation in the Relativistic Regime
An electromagnetic wave is expected to propagate through an overdense plasma, provided that its amplitude is large enough to bring the electron motion into the relativistic regime. We study this induced transparency by using 1D and 2D particle simulations. We find that large chaotic longitudinal electric fields are generated and strong plasma heating takes place during the propagation. This beh...

Stimulated scattering induced by the longitudinal electric field of a pump wave is studied theoretically for the case of dense, relativistic electron beams traveling in cylindrical metal waveguides, Two processes are examined. In one, the pump wave decays parametrically into a slow and a fast space charge wave. In the other, it decays into a slow space charge wave and a TM wave of the guide. Th...
متن کاملTheory of Gas Ionization by Intense Electromagnetic Fields
The distribution function of the electrons produced in the interaction between an intense electromagnetic wave and a neutral gas is derived and is shown to be nonequilibrium and anisotropic. By assuming that the time scale of gas ionization is much greater than the field period, it is shown that the electron distribution function formed in microwave and optical discharges has sharp anisotropy a...
